Workshop Descriptions
If you don’t know who Suhaila is because you are new to dance read the artical on her in the August Issue of Nafoura E-Magazine or go to her website at http://www.suhailainternational.com/.
Level 1 Technique
Here is your opportunity to focus on the material covered in Level 1 of the Suhaila Salimpour Belly Dance Format. Level 1 provides students with the building blocks to develop strength, endurance and knowledge; with these tools, students can progress to more advanced material. Students learn correct posture and positioning, movement internalization, specific muscle control, safe training and drilling methods, and the concepts of timing and downbeat. Be ready to work hard . . . and to walk away inspired.
Egyptian Style Choreography
From the creative mind of Suhaila, this Egyptian-style choreography is an exciting exploration of movement, pattern and musical interpretation. Be ready for muscle isolation, layering, timing variations, downbeat options . . . and those are just the starting concepts. Using her comprehensive and consistent format language, Suhaila clearly breaks down each move and choreography phrase into understandable pieces that layer and connect.
Taqseem Movements and Layering
You’ll never view a taqseem the same way again. In this workshop, students will learn to isolate muscle groups so different movements can be layered with variations in timing, downbeat, and movement quality. The combinations and possibilities are limitless, and students will learn the process of integrating layers with control and intent.
Tribal Fusion Hard Rock/Belly Dance Choreography
Whatever stylization you like, you’re going to love this Suhaila choreography. This piece has a tribal fusion hard rock feel, but it’s pure belly dance at the core. Be ready for muscle isolat ion, layering, timing variations, downbeat options . . . and those are just the starting concepts. Using her comprehensive and consistent format language, Suhaila clearly breaks down each move and choreography phrase into understandable pieces that layer and connect. Come to class ready to ROCK!

What will be covered in the workshop
For over a year now DC’s most spectacular Object Manipulators have joined forces, performed and taught under the title Dance Afire. Two of these talents, Surprise and Fractal, have put their heads together and come up with a two hour workshop that will introduce you to the expressions of two of our arts most dramatic tools, Hoop and Staff. Below you’ll find the basic sylabi Fractal and Surprise will use to explore first principles with you. What many outside of the practice do not know is that Hoop and staff though visually distinct, are from the wielders perspective very similar. This Workshop has been constructed to maximize your exposure to these similar techniques ensuring that you get the most out of your time with Dance Afire. As a dancer you know that technique is just the beginning. Using these first principles as a foundation Surprise and Fractal will share their unique insights as dancers on how these techniques may be integrated into your personal practice and used to accent your dance.
